For the Love of Wine: A Look at Stoller’s Award-Winning
Specialty Blends in the Summit Survival Kit

2017 – Nancy’s Pinot Noir

Named after Bill Stoller’s sister, this wine, made primarily from Pommard, is bold. Aromatics of sandalwood, anise, and soft red fruits give way to a rich, structured palate due in part to 35% whole cluster fermentation. Flavors of black cherry, tilled earth, minerality, and spice lead to a long finish.

2017 – Reserve Chardonnay

Our Reserve Chardonnay is a blend of some of our oldest Dijon vines on the property, planted between 1995 and 2000. Whole cluster pressed to mitigate phenolics, this wine was barrel fermented with native yeast. With only 50% malolactic conversion, our Reserve Chardonnay expresses aromatics of lemon curd, flint, white blossom, and wet stone. The palate meets the nose with a citrus vibrancy, revealing a luxurious mouthfeel due to extended lees contact and balanced use of oak.

2017 – HISTORY Red Blend

In her 16 year tenure as a winemaker, Melissa Burr is most excited to share this Red Blend. The 2017 History Red Blend, creates a confluence of time and place showing the nuances of vine age and varietal typicity - the embodiment of History.  Comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon (71%), Malbec (20%), and Merlot (9%), the nose flirts between deep, concentrated purple notes like cassis and blackberry and bright red fruits like dried cranberry. On the palate, the wine exhibits the balance of all the varieties playing together with opulent fruit, fresh earth, caramelized sugar, and baking spice. Enjoy alone or alongside a meal.

Learn More: Crafting Wine is an Art, and a Science

Stoller is the first LEED Gold Certified winery in the world, combining progressive, environmentally friendly design with gentle, traditional winemaking practices that minimize environmental impact. The Stoller leadership team collaborates leading viticultural researchers from Oregon State University and conducts long-term experiments to further discover the vineyard’s full potential and provide thought leadership to their industry.

Stoller Family Vineyards has been lauded for their commitment to sustainable principles, including:

  • Continuously elevated fruit quality, using techniques to work with nature instead of fighting it – planting native wildflowers to maintain the vineyard’s natural predator-pest balance, for example
  • State-of-the-art viticultural practices include mechanical “herbicide free” weeding systems, advanced recirculation, venturi and tornado sprayers to better apply and reduce total spray volume, and advanced weather stations to deliver actual vine sensory data
  • An innovative gravity flow process that offers a gentler approach to winemaking, allowing a reduction in the amount of energy required for production

About the Winemaker:

Melissa Burr studied winemaking and fermentation science at OSU and interned during harvest for several local wineries before becoming production winemaker for Cooper Mountain. In 2003, Melissa joined Stoller Family Estate as the winery’s first dedicated winemaker. In her 17-year tenure with Stoller, Melissa has worked in concert with the vineyard team to oversee the site’s continued refinement. She has helped grow production from 1,000 cases to 60,000 while acting as a steward of Stoller’s legacy.

In 2013, Melissa partnered with Stoller to launch History, a brand dedicated to paying homage to historic vineyards in the Pacific Northwest. The collection will continue to evolve, as she tells more stories about these esteemed vineyards and the people who started them. Melissa enjoys the creative and natural process of winemaking and the dynamic nature of the Oregon wine industry. The constant evolution of every new vintage pushes her to learn more about her craft.
