The Rise and Fall of an Angel Community: A Cautionary Tale
Description

The Boise Angel Alliance, a charter member of the  Angel Capital Association,  raised four angel funds and successfully deployed about $5 million of angel capital over ten years.   It failed in its attempt to raise a fifth fund and disbanded, leaving the Idaho entrepreneurial community without an organized source of angel capital.

In this session, former ACA Chair and The Angel Next Door podcast host Marcia Dawood interviews long time angel Denise Dunlap.  Denise invested in the BAA angel funds and provided (and continues to provide) administrative services to the funds.  She has a unique insider’s perspective on what worked and why this mature angel group eventually disbanded.
Her observations from the BAA and similar experiences of other angel groups around the country are what led to the creation of a new type of fund, which makes revenue-finance investments in early-stage companies.  Marcia and Denise will explore what went wrong in the formation and execution of the traditional fund model, and what lessons other angel groups might learn from this experience as they mature.  They will also explore how revenue-finance expands the early-stage financial ecosystem and what makes an organization more successful in raising revenue-finance funds.
